Skills Shortage Pushing Salaries Up

The lastest ‘Report on Jobs’ research from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), in collaboration with Deloitte and Touche, has shown that demand for skilled employees in the UK has caused a sharp increase in wages in some industries.

The report noted that as the pool of available candidates for advertised jobs fell for the fourth month running, staff pay rates rose markedly on the previous month.

“Permanent staff starting salaries, which are a key leading indicator of overall future pay growth as they are particularly sensitive to skills shortages, rose at the fastest rate since April 2001,” said Brett Walsh, head of UK human capital at Deloitte.

Despite the global economic downturn, the UK is still in need of skilled migrants in many industry sectors. As organisations look to reduce costs and increase productivity, qualified, experience workers become more important than ever.
