In the wake of reports that the UK’s population is going to explode to become the largest in Europe by 2050, with around 80 million people living there, some politicians have called upon the government to respond by capping immigration numbers.
They argue that public services and the housing market cannot sustain the speed of population growth that is being predicted and that radical reforms need to be taken to prevent a crisis.
Despite this massive increase in population, the UK is undergoing a skills shortage and is actively encouraging skilled migrants to live and work there to fill labour gaps, and has recently made changes to its immigration policies in line with this need. Similar to the Australian system, the UK recently adopted a tiered points system, however, unlike Australia, there is no cap on the number of visas that are available.
