Critical Shortage of Farmers in UK

An articlein the UK’s Farmers Weekly Interactive has highlighted the plight of many farm owners throughout the UK but particularly in the South East.  There simply isn’t the manpower available to work effectively.  The article, written by farmer Robert Law, says that where many farms used to rely on agriculture students they are now having to look overseas as even studying farming has become unpopular.

“The shortage of staff has accelerated sharply, with 39% fewer full-time farm workers on UK farms than in 1999. This will take a long time to reverse – but it needs to if we are not to have a crisis in 10 to 15 years. We are told that the average age of farmers is touching 60,” explains Law.
