The British have a reputation for eccentricity and it is evident in many of the traditional British summer activities that bring out fierce competition and rivalry among fellow British subjects. Last weekend Pulborough hosted the most prestigious lawn mower race in the world – a 12 hour marathon, run around a dry field, overnight. The winner, Matt Jones, who completed 334 laps to take the title, quite seriously told the media that winning the race ticked off one of his life ambitions.
Its not just mowers though. Lunatic annual events pop up all summer long. From the Gloucester Cheese Rolling competition, said to date back to Saxon times, which consists of lucid folk hurling themselves down a very steep grassy hill, chasing rounds of cheese that can reach speeds of 70km per hour, often injuring themselves quite seriously to the Bognor Birdman competition which is almost self explanatory or the Nettle Eating World Championships in West Dorset, there is something to intrigue everyone.
It may be possible to spend every weekend of the UK summer witnessing the eccentricities of the British character making fools of themselves and taking it very seriously. Spectator sports abound.
